6/12/2023 0 Comments Worm loves worm book![]() The worm in that epithet for the constant reader does not refer to larvae or the earthworm, as some children's library posters might have you believe, and does not allude to the figurative devouring of books. The figurative bookworm began its career as an insult, a wholly negative term for someone who reads too much. The sole bookworm today is the human bookworm-and the way the word is used has changed over time. If you happen to hear an entomologist referring to book lice, he or she is talking about another bug altogether. Nowadays no one is likely to refer to any of these larvae as bookworms, least of all entomologists. The term still carries a tinge of disapproval-who wants to be called a worm?-but is widely considered to be more positive than it once was. ![]() Originally, 'bookworm' was an entirely negative term: 'worm' was an Elizabethan insult that meant "wretch," and to be called a 'bookworm' was an insult. ![]()

Although his loving aunt has opened her heart and home to him, his grief is an overwhelming thing that makes even the smallest joys difficult to accept. His parents were killed in a devastating car accident from which he barely survived. Trace Carter is a young teen struggling to hold himself together in a new school, new town, and new life. Author Pat Cummings has a gift for making readers care deeply for the young people she writes about, and that gift is what keeps the pages turning. ![]() ![]() Trace, both the book and the main character who shares its name, are emotional and endearing and achingly smart. But don’t mistake an absence of horror or suspense for lack of compelling narrative. It is a muted novel, as much about the struggle of adapting to a new family situation as it is about a young ghost in the New York Public Library. ![]() Trace by Pat Cummings is exactly that, a ghost story that combines an unfolding historical mystery with a heartfelt coming-of-age tale. Sometimes, readers want a gentle story with big-hearted characters that manages to convey powerful drama in a subtle plot. ![]() 6/12/2023 0 Comments Shakespeare's moor of venice![]() ![]() ![]() This hurts his pride, and in his opinion, his reputation. The play begins with Iago’s complaint about being unjustly passed over for a promotion. Iago is contemptuous of reputation, believing that it can be manipulated to suit a person’s needs. Iago does not trust women to be faithful, and in the end, he convinces Othello to also believe the same. He tells Emilia that women are “pictures out of door, bells in your parlours, wildcats in your kitchens, saints in your injuries…” (Shakespeare 2.1.122). Iago views women as deceitful, temperamental, untrustworthy and sexually immoral. This shows that he will act badly if he finds out that Desdemona is unfaithful. But I do love thee! And when I love thee not, chaos comes again” (Shakespeare 3.3.100). He mutters to himself: “Perdition catch my soul. Othello is a murderer by the end of the play but his potential for violence is seen beforehand when he refuses Desdemona’s invitation to have dinner with Cassio. Such behavior breeds anger in the people around Cassio. For example, he keeps praising Desdemona, and he kisses Emilia in front of Iago at the same time as he apologises for doing so (Shakespeare 2.2.109). However, he is flawed because he is too forward with women. On his part, Cassio appears to be an innocent pawn in Iago’s plans for revenge. She tells her father that although she owes him her life and education, her current duty is to her husband, Othello (Shakespeare 1.3.210). ![]() Desdemona’s strength appears when she repels her father and defends her love for Othello. ![]() 6/11/2023 0 Comments Flowers in the attic by vc andrews![]() ![]() Robin Sheppard directed parts three and four Amy Rardin and Conner Good also wrote for the series. ![]() along with Zoë Rocha of RubyRock Pictures, Gary Pearl of Aquarius Content, writer Paul Sciarrotta and Declan O’Dwyer, who directed the first two episodes. They’ll outsource your job while lecturing you about transgender bathrooms. The patchouli-scented hand-wringers who worried about whales and defended free speech have been replaced by globalists who hide their hard-edged economic agenda behind the smokescreen of identity politics. Traditional liberals are gone, he writes. She gets kidnapped and taken to Trollus, where she’s told she has the power to break the curse that’s keeping the trolls under the mountain. ![]() Stolen Songbird is the story of Cecile, a girl who has been tutored to follow in her mother’s footsteps as a singer. Thankfully, I put my foot down last month and decided to prioritize reading it – and it was so worth it! As with many other novels in my life, I heard of Stolen Songbird the year it came out (and it was primarily good things), wanted to read it, but never got around to it. They always just seemed really unappealing, and not a fantastical creature I could ever get into when I was reading. ![]() Because really, prior to reading Stolen Songbird, I didn't have the greatest impression of trolls. I’m still a bit incredulous over the fact that I enjoyed a fantasy novel about trolls. ![]() 6/11/2023 0 Comments 湖畔亭事件 by Edogawa Rampo![]() ![]() But during and after the Second World War, he started to shift his audiences to a younger age range, created teenage detective stories, which gained fame for his character, Akechi Kogorō, and made him an even more notable writer. Peculiar storytelling, brutal and eroticism often have places in his work during his most active period. ![]() After his initial attempt for traditional "whodunit" novels, he started to show his personality in his works. But one other reason may be because, at his time, most writings are published in the newspaper, so it's harder to publish longer works, since newspaper serials will break the continuity of novels, and it's also not profitable. Besides Poe, Ranpo was also influenced by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, he created The Boy Detective Club as helpers to his iconic detective Akechi Kogorō, paying tribute to Baker Street Irregulars in the Sherlock Holmes series.Įdogawa Ranpo started as a short story writer because he believed that short stories are the epic format of mysteries. ![]() Deeply influenced by western mystery stories, Tarō Hirai took the romaji version of the name, Edgar Allan Poe, as his pseudonym, and built his legacy with the name Edogawa Ranpo. ![]() 6/10/2023 0 Comments Adam harris the state must provide![]() ![]() ![]() And while Meredith’s story may seem like one from a bygone era, Harris persuasively makes the case that America’s higher education system has been unequal from the start - and that pattern persists today. The Atlantic staff writer Adam Harris, in his new book, “The State Must Provide: Why America’s Colleges Have Always Been Unequal - and How to Set Them Right,” chronicles the legal and literal battles students like Meredith fought to integrate some of the nation’s colleges. When he finally did make it to the school a few days later, Meredith was met with a riot that ultimately left three people dead and several wounded. ![]() The crowd of thousands of protesters and hundreds of police officers gathered there threatened to overrun his escort of 25 federal marshals. ![]() 6/10/2023 0 Comments The Endlands by Vincent Hobbes![]() ![]() To illustrate how the theoretical link between Indigenous peoples and children emerges not as a simple analogy, but rather, as the source of the premodern/modern and savage/civilized binaries, I trace the various historical iterations of the political/childhood opposition through the classical, medieval, enlightenment, and modern eras. ![]() Thus, it is not contingent, but rather necessary that justificatory frameworks of European empire and colonialism depict Indigenous peoples as children. ![]() I argue that civilizational progress and settler colonialism are structured according to the opposition between politics governed by reason or faith and the figure of the child as sinful or bestial. Disparate ideas of progress and practices related to colonial dispossession and domination can be traced back to the Enlightenment, and as far back as ancient Greece, but there remain unexplored logics and continuities. ![]() Settler colonialism is structured in part according to the principle of civilizational progress yet the roots of this doctrine are not well understood. ![]() ![]() ![]() The Brothers Hawthorneis not a sequel, publisher Little, Brown Books for Young Readers confirmed, but a new stand-alone book.
